Surveillance cameras at ATMs and shops gone again in Maarheeze

The extra camera surveillance that was set up to combat nuisance in the center of Maarheeze will disappear again. The police say that the cameras in the shops are enough. This shows that additional supervision on the street is not necessary to combat the nuisance experienced by villagers and shopkeepers.

Residents of Maarheeze have been complaining for a long time about nuisance from asylum seekers living in the nearby AZC in Budel. Earlier this year, extra security was installed at the station because many people would travel by train without a ticket. But shopkeepers in the center of Maarheeze also contacted the municipality because they were experiencing problems with shoplifters.

After the persistent complaints, the municipality decided to remove three benches in the center and install nine additional cameras at the businesses. In this way, asylum seekers should cause less nuisance and reduce the number of shoplifting incidents.

“It turns out that the police do not need the camera images for this.”

The extra surveillance cameras are located at the Jumbo, the ATM and the Kruidvat. However, because these cameras are on public roads, strict privacy rules apply. The mayor must therefore be able to prove that they are necessary to maintain public order and help catch shoplifters. “It turns out that the police do not need the camera images for this,” the municipality of Cranendonck said. That is why three camera masts will be removed again on Wednesday.

The removed benches, on the other hand, do have added value. People still linger in the shopping area, but for less time than before. “This ensures more peace and quiet in the shopping area,” the municipality says.

The three benches will be placed back in a different location in the municipality. A suitable location is still being sought.
