Surprisingly, this is now the best-selling car in Europe | Car

In September, 1,038,481 new cars were sold in Europe. That is an increase of 15 percent compared to last year. The Peugeot 208 has been knocked out of first place.

In first place is now the Tesla Model Y, which sold no less than 29,367 times last month. No car comes close to this. That is surprising, because although electric cars are doing well in countries such as Norway and the Netherlands, the share of electric cars is lagging behind, especially in Eastern European countries. The share of electric cars nevertheless increased, with a share of 15.6 percent, according to data from data supplier Jato, based on registration figures from 27 European markets.

Plug-in hybrids are falling far back in sales

No other car comes close to the Model Y, which is now produced in Germany and gets a huge boost from the recently introduced rear-wheel drive variant, making the car about 16,000 euros less expensive. Tesla has the wind in Europe anyway, because the number of registrations of electric cars in Europe rose to 160,000 units in September. Plug-in hybrids clearly do a lot less. Only 7 percent of the registered cars had a plug and an internal combustion engine.

The shortage of microchips is getting smaller

In place two of the best-selling cars in Europe is the Peugeot 208, which has already occupied the first place several times this year. Skoda is doing great with the Octavia and the Volkswagen T-Roc is also climbing hard in the rankings. Sales of both models from the VW stable were limited last year due to limited availability of microchips, but that scarcity is now diminishing. Also striking is the great interest in the new Nissan Qashqai.
