Onygo was actually on the brink of extinction, but now the clothing chain will continue, thanks to a well-known name in the shoe industry.
Frank Revermann, the former managing director of the shoe retailer Görtz, will take over the clothing chain that belongs to the Deichmann SE trading group, as the former parent company Deichmann confirmed at the request of FashionUnited. The industry magazine Textilwirtschaft had previously reported on the takeover.
In October, the former Onygo parent company announced that it was “with great regret” that they had decided to discontinue Onygo’s business operations. Unfortunately, it was said at the time that the business model aimed at a young, fashionable customer could not be operated economically in the long term.
19 of 28 branches will remain
Revermann seems to see this differently, as the takeover of Onygo is said to have been completed on March 1st. The former Onygo SE was renamed the new Onygo Retail GmbH, based in Hamburg.
As part of the agreement, not only 19 of the 28 Onygo branches were taken over, but also the employment relationships of the employees. At the time the business closure was announced in October, around 280 employees worked at Onygo.
“Aware of our responsibility for our employees, we have explored all options in order to best avoid shop closures,” explained a Deichmann company spokesman when asked by FashionUnited. “The fact that we have succeeded in creating over two thirds of the branches together with Onygo Retail GmbH is good news for the employees.”
In addition to the employees’ working conditions, the inventory, furniture and shop fittings were also taken over. According to the industry magazine, the stores, including the locations in Saarbrücken, Oldenburg, Essen, Siegen, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Mainz, Dortmund, Koblenz, Wetzlar, Passau, Münster, Kempten, Hamburg EEZ, Berlin Alexa, Mannheim, Bonn, Ludwigsburg and Aachen will be continued under the previous name.
