The first Marathon Cup of the season resulted in a surprising winner for the men. Jeroen Janissen from Haarlem was the first to cross the finish line after 125 laps on the Jaap Edenbaan in Amsterdam. “If you told me this beforehand, I wouldn’t believe you.”
“We drove away from the rest with a group of eight and then we had to fight it out with each other,” Jeroen Janissen tells NH Sport a day after his spectacular win. “For a long time nothing happened, but five laps before the end I tried and finally crossed the finish line with a large lead.”
Experience
Janissen is in his second season in the top division. Last year, the 25-year-old Haarlemmer finished third four times. “Last year I was often in finals and I now benefit from that experience. The way I drove away now, I did not dare to do that last year.”

Orange leader suit
This victory means that Janissen will ride in the orange leader’s suit at the second race in Enschede next week. Whether he is still dressed in the leader’s suit afterwards, Janissen is not sure. “I expect the competition to let me go less quickly now.” Bart Hoolwerf and Harm Visser are right behind Janissen in the standings, because they finished second and third on the Jaap Edenbaan. “I’m not busy with the standings yet, I hope to get as many points as possible.”
