In Meppel, the Lions were at four supermarkets this year to collect goods, yielding a total of about 165 crates. Until well into the evening, the food bank drivers still had to drive past the supermarkets to take everything away.
Not all products have been counted yet at the food bank in Emmen, but the provisional yield is about 400 crates. In Emmen, collections were made at 29 supermarkets, including by the Lions. Next Monday the food bank will continue counting and the final yield will be announced. Chairman Ton Sleeking is more than satisfied: “A fantastic result”, is how he calls the provisional result.
In addition to food, RTV Drenthe also received approximately 1,600 euros in donations. The donation campaign runs until the end of this year. The money raised is distributed among the food banks in Drenthe
Flyers were distributed at supermarkets by volunteers from food banks, churches and members of various service clubs. In Meppel by the Lions, in Hoogeveen by the Rotary and the Soroptimists, in Aa and Hunze by the Lions Club de Hondsrug, in Emmen by the Lions Emmen and in Assen by the Lions Assen and Assen Drentsche Aa and the Rotary. Most of them stood at a supermarket for a few hours and were then alternated by a colleague. Several of them experienced people arriving with full shopping carts and donating everything.
The food banks use the products collected to replenish their stocks, so that they can provide their clients with basic products such as rice, pasta, coffee, oil and care products again next year. Four food banks are active in our province. Together they provide 3,600 people with a package weekly or biweekly. Every organization has a central branch with a number of distribution points.
