The first supermoon of the year appeared in the sky last night. The moon is then very close to the earth, appears particularly large and shines extraordinarily brightly.

Current weather favored a particularly good view of the celestial phenomenon, so there is a clear view of the Super Moon. On supermoon nights, the moon can shine up to 30 percent brighter as more sunlight reaches Earth, which is reflected off the moon.

In addition, the moon appears up to 14 percent larger. However, only experienced moon observers will probably notice the difference in size compared to normal full moons.

Today the distance is only about 357,400 kilometers. That is around 30,000 kilometers less than is usual with ordinary full moons.
