Sunday evening torchlight procession through Zaandam for Ukrainian people

Tomorrow evening at 19.30 pm, Torches for Peace, together with the municipality of Zaanstad, will organize a torchlight procession. The route starts at the town hall in Zaandam and goes via the Russian Neighborhood to Dam Square. Finally, the statue of Czaar Peter is highlighted in blue-yellow.

Anyone who wants to participate is welcome on Sunday, the municipality writes. She informs that a small number of torches are available. People who have their own torch can take it with them.

“The images we get from eastern Europe are heartbreaking,” says mayor Jan Hamming of Zaanstad. Hamming welcomed the first refugees from Ukraine with blue and yellow tulips last Thursday. They are accommodated in Zaan hotels.

Blue-yellow Czar Peter

The tour concludes at Dam Square, where the statue of Czaar Peter will be highlighted in blue-yellow. At the end of the tour, yellow and blue flowers will be placed at the statue. Next week, the Bullekerk will also be highlighted in blue-yellow.

At 7.30 pm the procession leaves from the Stadhuisplein (in front of the town hall). Interested parties can gather from 7 p.m. The participants walk to Dam Square via the Russian Neighborhood. Mayor Jan Hamming will speak briefly. Then the lights at the Czaar Peter statue are turned on.
