Sumar, Podemos and the EU agree to attend the Galician elections as a coalition so as not to disperse the vote

AddPodemos and Left United They will compete as a coalition in the Galician elections on February 18, although they still have to close the details of the pact – distribution of lists and economic resources, for example – which now depends on the bases of each organization giving their approval. It has only been confirmed, for now, that the candidate for the Presidency of the Xunta will be Marta Lois, current spokesperson for Sumar in Congress, since she will leave before the elections, according to sources from her formation.

This Wednesday was key to closing an alliance that was expected to be impossible after last day 5 the five Podemos deputies in the Lower House abandoned the ranks of Sumar and went to the mixed group, criticizing the strategy of Yolanda Díaz, leader of that platform and vice president of the Government. She was accused of almost seeking her disappearance.

Shortly after, Marta Lois considered a pact almost impossible, as did her spokesperson in GaliciaPaulo Carlos López, but the need not to disperse the vote of this left to the left of the PSOE and the election of Lois as a candidate were polishing the edges until closing a pre-agreement just on the day that Podemos Galicia announced two candidacies for its primaries. Voting would begin tomorrow, so it was urgent to stop the process. Now he will ask his bases if they approve a coalition with Sumar and the EU (with Alianza Verde and Equo), as announced by the leader of Podemos Galicia, Borja San Ramón. “It is important that everyone votes on the left,” he alleged, although their maxim of choosing candidates through primaries is violated.

It was Sumar, however, who was in charge of revealing the aforementioned “pre-agreement”, through his spokesperson in Galicia. There were no further references in the appearance in which Yolanda Díaz accompanied Marta Lois in announcing her as an official candidate, after being unanimously ratified by the promoter of her organization.

Díaz defended the role of Sumar, whom polls grant a maximum of two seats on 18-F. “Adding will be the key to defeating the PP. “It’s no joke, it’s the key to the mobilization of the progressive people of our country,” he proclaimed before more than fifty people in a Compostela hotel.

His analysis is based on the premise that Sumar attracts a sector of the left not represented by the PSdeG or the BNG and that prefers abstention rather than betting on those forces. with those of Díaz want a tripartite that puts an end to the 14 consecutive years of PP governments in the Xunta.

That objective, he continued, depends on repeating the results of the general passes. “If we Galicians vote as we did on July 23, we will win the elections. “The PP will only win with abstention,” he proclaimed, although on June 23 the popular They swept Galicia with 43.5% of the ballots and 13 of 23 seats, with 7 for the PSOE, 2 for Sumar and 1 for the BNG. Even so, Díaz recalled that the left and his pacts allowed him to block the way for a Feijóo who was already seen in Moncloa.

The vice president avoided any reference to the pact with Podemos, which has launched the primaries for the European elections with the intention of competing with Sumar, which at the state level is considered a left docile to the economic system. After their disagreements and divorce in Congress, they will share the ballot on February 18.

“Useful policies”

The reason? Gather votes to apply “useful policies” such as raising the minimum wage by 40% last term or maintaining the social shield against the price crisis, renewed this Wednesday by the Council of Ministers. “From the Ministry of Labor, we did more for Galicia than Mr. Feijóo did in 14 years,” he said, referring to the previous president of the Xunta, replaced by Alfonso Rueda.

Lois, for her part, assumes the role of candidate after months of doubts in Sumar and after ruling out that possibility a month ago. It was Díaz’s first optionbut she sounded out Teresa Táboas and Martiño Noriega, who refused to accept the assignment, so she returned to the initial plan.

Sumar sources assure that he will not reach 18-F in the Chamber, so his seat must pass to Manuel Lago Peñas, who in turn will have to leave his position as one of Díaz’s main advisors in the Ministry of Labor. If he resigns, the position would pass to Borja San Ramón, who would go to the mixed group. “Today they are all crying because Marta returns to her land,” said Díaz.

Lois appealed to mobilization. “If we vote like 23-J, this procedure becomes a change of era,” he predicted to implement policies like those of the central government in the Xunta. “There is a vote that only Sumar is capable of mobilizing,” he assured, although this political space lost its 14 minutes in 2020. Then, the Galicia en Común candidate, Antón Gómez-Reino, broke his promise and kept his seat in the Cortes.
