Sugar trader Alvean expects new shortages this year. India, the world’s second largest producer of sugar, may not export due to extreme weather, the trader expects. Global inventories are likely to fall further.

In response to the statements, the price of raw sugar on the New York futures market rose more than 4 percent to 26.94 cents per pound on Tuesday. That is the highest level since October 2011.
