Suddenly a familythe plot of the movie
Sam Harper (Chris Pine) is a business facilitator going through a very critical professional moment. He lives in New York, is accused of violating federal law and needs money. Going back home, his girlfriend Hannah (Olivia Wilde) informs him that the fatherwith whom he hadn’t had a relationship for some time, is dead.
They leave for Los Angeles, to be close to his mother, Lillian (Michelle Pfeiffer). Here they meet the lawyer, who informs them that he hasn’t inherited anything, but he hands them over $150,000 and a note saying he has to deliver it to Josh David (Michael Hall D’Addario). Until that moment, Sam knew nothing about Josh and realizes that his father led a double life.
Josh is 11 years old and his mother, Frankie Davis (Elizabeth Banks), works as a bartender and is a former alcoholic. He meets her at a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous and discovers that she is the illegitimate daughter of his father and Josh is, therefore, his nephew. Meanwhile, Hannah leaves the scene. Sam tells her that he has no intention of giving the money to Frankie and his disappointed girlfriend decides to return to New York.
Sam reveals his true identity to Frankie
To get closer to Frankie, Sam pretends to be an alcoholic and immediately becomes part of his life. He discovers that their father Jerry went to visit them every Sunday and that Frankie never knew his father’s wife and son. While Sam mulls over his legal problems and tries to find a solution, Frankie decides that closeness with Josh is not healthy for the boy, because Sam could return to New York at any moment and the son would experience the separation as an abandonment.
However, they continue to date, until Sam understands that Frankie has fallen in love with him and decides to reveal his true identity. A heated argument ensues, at the end of which Frankie throws him out of the house. Sam just has to accept the decision and get out of the way.
Lillian is admitted to the hospital with a heart problem. Hannah returns to the scene, who finds Sam in the waiting room and they make up. Furthermore, she informs him that she will start taking a course at UCLA to be close to him. Sam rethinks his life and gets Frankie the money through a lawyer. The sister accepts the money, she quits her job, goes back to school and moves to another neighborhood with Josh. However, she cuts off all contact with Sam.
Suddenly a familytrue story and ending of the film
Once discharged, Lillian tells Sam the whole truth about Frankie and her marriage to her father. She was the one who forced Jerry to choose the two of them over Frankie’s mother. She did it to protect him, but she didn’t think about the consequences. Jerry never had a good relationship with Sam due to feelings of guilt for abandoning his other daughter.
Once you find out how things really are, Sam goes to Frankie’s house, asks her forgiveness for not revealing the truth right away and tells her he wants to be in her life and Josh’s. He also shows her an old home movie shot by Jerry when Sam was still a child.
The images show him meeting another little girl in a playground. It’s Frankie. In this moment, she understands that Jerry tried to raise them together. A sign that he has never had preferences for one or the other, but simply has not had the courage to impose himself with Lillian.
Suddenly a family is partially inspired by the true story of the director and screenwriter. Alex Kurtzman he explained that his father had previously been married and had two children. However, as a child he never saw his siblings. The meeting took place years later, as an adult, when he met his sister at a party.
