Such was Charles’ first speech as king

Charles III gave his first speech as king directly from Buckingham Palace.

After the death of Queen Elizabeth, power in Britain changed for the first time in seventy years. The eldest son of the late monarch Charles III is now the king of the country.

The 73-year-old king, who was crowned the oldest ever, gave his first speech as the country’s ruler on Friday, September 9. Charles addressed the nation from Buckingham Palace in London at 6pm local time.

– I am speaking to you today overwhelmed by deep sadness, he began his speech.

He remembers his mother beautifully and says that she was an inspiration to him as well as to the entire royal family. Charles continues how he will forever be grateful to his mother for all her love, teachings, understanding and example.

– Queen Elizabeth lived her life well: she kept her promise and now we mourn her passing most deeply.

Charles goes on to say how, in addition to the great sadness of their immediate circle, the death also touches people across Britain, the Commonwealth and the world.

– On my mother’s 21st birthday, she promised to dedicate her whole life to serving the nation. Whether his life was short or long. That was more than a promise: it was a commitment that defined his entire life.

The king adds how Elizabeth sacrificed her life to her duties. He never ceased to be devoted to the nation, but plowed through eras of great joy and celebration as well as great sorrows and losses.

– During the last 70 years, we have seen our society merge into one of many cultures and religions.

At the end of the speech, the new king also talks about the future of the country, whose ruler he will be in the future.

– Like the Queen, I too will defend our nation’s constitutional principles for the rest of my earthly life.

He adds how he will serve all British citizens with great respect and love, as he has done in his life so far.
