Alexander Albon is a hot candidate for another spectacular change in Formula 1. The Thai-British driver is associated with Hamilton’s successor at Mercedes or a comeback to the Red Bull cockpit. Now the 27-year-old is talking about his situation in the premier motorsport class.
2023 was a good season for Alexander Albon. The Williams driver ended up in 13th place in the drivers’ standings, almost single-handedly giving Williams a boost to seventh place – a big leap for the traditional racing team.
These achievements quickly arouse desire in Formula 1. The name Albon is now mentioned again and again in connection with Mercedes and Red Bull. Especially after the announced sensational move from Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari. According to F1 journalist Peter Windsor, he was offered a three-year contract at Red Bull.
Formula 1: Albon pushes rumors aside for now
“To be honest, the focus isn’t really on that at the moment,” Albon told Sky Sports News about the ongoing speculation about a move.
That’s more “the work behind the scenes,” Albon continued: “I’m concentrating on Williams and the positive spiral we’re in and trying to do my job as well as possible.”
The former Red Bull driver explained: “Obviously there is a lot of interest in the performances. That’s why it’s a bit loud, especially because of the season we had last year. I have to keep it up and then do a little bit more to make sure those opportunities arise.”
Albon stressed that he was “focusing on Williams at the moment”. “It will be a lot about the first few races on the calendar to see how much we have achieved as a team.”
The racing team from Grove knows about the qualities of its driver and is putting a stop to all rumors for now: “Alex is under contract with Williams until the end of 2025,” team boss James Vowles recently made clear in a media round.
Formula 1: Albon can hardly believe Hamilton-Hammer
Albon was “shocked” by the change news of Hamilton, who will drive for Ferrari in 2025. “I have to say that normally we have a little more insight into what is happening a week or two before the announcement of such a move. But I was in Spain at the time and I think I was as surprised as everyone else,” he explained .
“It’s amazing for the sport. I think the impact, the noise around Formula 1, it has to be one of the biggest news in the transfer market for a long time, especially for Formula 1.”
It was exciting to see and at least for him it was a little moment in which he had to pinch himself. “It’s just so strange to imagine Lewis in a red jumpsuit.”
