The new British prime minister to replace the outgoing Boris Johnson will be announced on September 5, the ruling Conservative Party reported Monday.
“We need a fair amount of time before we can announce the results,” Graham Brady, chair of the committee that established the voting procedure, said of the chosen date.
So far, 11 candidates have applied to take over from Johnson’s position as party leader and prime minister. Under rules agreed upon by designated party officials, the field will be reduced to two candidates “in an accelerated process,” Brady said. Party members are then given the opportunity to vote for one of the two remaining candidates by mail.
