Successor mayor Karel Loohuis will be announced next week

Who will be the successor to mayor Karel Loohuis in Hoogeveen? The city council will announce this on Wednesday, December 20.

During a closed meeting, the council chooses who it will put forward. Later in the evening, it will become clear to the public during the public meeting who will take over from Karel Loohuis. That happens around 9 p.m. The new mayor is expected to be sworn in on April 3.

At the beginning of October it became clear that fourteen people had applied for the position. Four women and ten men would like the position. Three applicants are members of the VVD, one of the CDA, one of the Christian Union and one of the PvdA. The other eight are not affiliated with or have not named a party.

The job interviews took place between November 7 and December 5. Interviews were held in two rounds, during which the candidates were given a preparatory assignment. It was then examined who best meets the profile for the new mayor.

Hoogeveen is looking for a real all-rounder, as can be seen from that sketch. Because the new mayor must be confident, enthusiastic, strategic, visible and a figurehead. ‘Hoogeveen just wants the best mayor’ was the headline of the profile sketch.

During the closed council meeting, two candidates are nominated to the municipal council. That is mandatory. The Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) can choose to nominate the second name on the list to the King for appointment. It may also be that the number one withdraws or that something happens to him or her.
