Successful debut for Castricummer Jimmy Hendriks at World Cup darts

Jimmy Hendriks survived the first round on his debut at the prestigious World Darts Championship in London. The 28-year-old Castricummer won 3-1 in sets against the higher seeded Englishman Jamie Hughes.

Both Hendriks and Hughes did not reach a high level from the start. Neither player came close to a high average. Hendriks, number 124 in the ranking, however, had to leave the first set to Hughes.

In the second set, Hughes’ level dropped further, so that Hendriks took the second set thanks to a number of strong legs. Hughes, who is 51st in the ranking, had even more trouble with his doubles from the third sets. Hendriks, surnamed The CaptainHughes then broke several times and thus took the third and fourth set.

For Hendriks it is the first time in his career that he participates in the World Cup. With his victory, he now qualifies for the second round, in which he will face 26th seed Brendan Dolan from Northern Ireland.

North Hollanders

Yesterday Niels Zonneveld was eliminated in his first round match. The darts player from Uitgeest lost 3-0 to Welshman Lewy Williams. Vincent van der Voort, the third North Holland participant in the World Cup, will play for the first time on Thursday evening. The Purmerender will compete against Cameron Menzies from Scotland in the second round.
