The special football story of the AZ Under 19 may have a nice international tail. In September, the winner of the Youth League will play against their Argentinian peers from Diego Maradona’s former club Boca Juniors. The stakes are high: the winner will take home the International Cup, the World Cup for youth teams.
By winning the Youth League, AZ now plays against Boca Juniors. In April, the Alkmaarders defeated the Croatian Hajduk Split 5-0 in the final in Geneva. As a result, it won the Youth League for the first time in history. Boca Juniors seized the South American variant of the Youth League last night, the U20 Copa Libertadores. Independiente del Valle was defeated 2-0 in the final.
The International Cup was created last year. The winners of the Youth League and the U20 Copa Libertadores are organized by UEFA and the South American Football Association COMNEBOL. Benfica won the previous edition after beating CA Peñarol 1-0 in Montevideo.
The match will be played in Argentina in September. It is still unknown where and when the final of the Internationals Cup will be played exactly.
