Success for the defending champion: RB Leipzig easily went one round against Ottensen

Status: 08/30/2022 11:34 p.m

Defending champions RB Leipzig shot their way into the second round of the DFB Cup on Tuesday evening (08/30/22) with an easy 8-0 win over regional league club Teutonia Ottensen. The game in which Ottensen would have had home rights was played in the RB stadium.

Timo Werner (19th, 20th, 43rd), André Silva (40th, 52nd), Emil Forsberg (56th), Christopher Nkunku (77th) and Dani Olmo (90th) scored for Leipzig, Ottensen missed Consolation goal by Maik Lukowicz (68th), who was free in front of RB goalkeeper Janis Blaswich. “It was fun. These are some of the most uncomfortable games because you have to win and you still don’t get compliments for it.”, said match winner Werner on ZDF. Coach Domenico Tedesco had special praise for his goalscorer: “Timo is on a very good way to get in very, very good form.”

“I’ve never lost so much as a coach”said Ottensen’s coach David Bergner, “But we showed at times that we can keep up. Werner’s double strike broke the initial euphoria. But I’m proud of the team, they saved face.”

Held in Leipzig, talks with Eberl

The game was played at the RB Leipzig stadium after Ottensen had to rely on an alternative location due to the lack of space at his venue. The Hamburg neighbors HSV and St. Pauli had rejected the role of host for the game against Leipzig for various reasons. The alternative location Dessau, 350 km from Hamburg, was canceled because the turf in the stadium there had been made unplayable with acid by unknown persons.

Shortly before the game, Leipzig’s boss Oliver Mintzlaff confirmed for the first time that there were talks about Max Eberl’s commitment as sports director. Negotiations have been held with both Eberl and Borussia Mönchengladbach, but an agreement is still pending. Eberl still has a contract on the Lower Rhine until 2026. The manager retired in January because of an overload.

Tor flood after teething troubles

The regional league managed to keep RB away from their own goal for almost 20 minutes. A post hit by André Silva (8th) was Leipzig’s only chance to score. But the one who untied the knot in the Leipzig game wore shirt number 11 and came back to Saxony from Chelsea at the start of the season: Timo Werner.

On passes from Forsberg and Silva, Werner turned ice cold with a double strike. Another post hit by Xaver Schlager (23rd) followed. Shortly before the break, the hosts increased again with a double strike from the well-harmonized duo Werner/Silva. First Werner served his Portuguese teammate, who thanked him a little later with a precise pass.

Ottensen had a shot right after the break

Hamburg’s first chance to score came right after the break, when Ole Wohlers took a shot from around 19 meters but missed the home team’s goal by quite a bit. Silva did better a little later: After a relay pass from Schlager and Dominik Szoboszlai, Silva took the ball directly from the penalty spot and hammered it under the bar.

The Hungarian Szoboszlai set up Leipzig’s sixth goal just minutes later when he pulled it in front of the goal from the right, where Forsberg back-heeled the pass into the net.

Nkunku also in the scorer list

Substitute Nkunku was unable to beat Ottensen’s goalkeeper Yannick Zummack with a well-placed shot from the inside left (65′), but then he also scored: After Silva’s preparation, Nkunku hit the ball from close range into the right angle. Nevertheless, Teutonia Ottensen had his best man in Zummack, who also brilliantly parried against a cracker by Willy Orban (67th).

Between Nkunku’s chance and goal, Maik Lukowicz had a great chance free-standing in front of Blaswich, but stumbled the ball. Olmo dusted off in the final minute to make it 8:0.
