Stuttgarter Platz is neglected – and what is the district doing?

Places that are attractive to the drug and homeless scene often become stressful for other passers-by and local residents. The authorities often have a hard time with this.

From the point of view of the responsible district, the neglect of Stuttgarter Platz in Berlin-Charlottenburg due to garbage, injections by drug addicts and so-called wild peeing by homeless people can only be stopped with difficulty. The establishment of a room for drug consumption has so far “failed” and the imposition of fines is often pointless. The Senate and the district responded to a request from the Greens.

“The primary goal” is still a drug consumption room on site, “to improve the hygienic conditions for drug addicts and at the same time to keep the negative impact on the population from discarded syringes and other accompanying circumstances as low as possible”. Because of the refusal of the landlords in the area around the square, this has not been possible so far.

The same applies to other locations. Now the district wants to set up a drug consumption room in a planned bicycle parking garage – in about “three to four years”.

There is a lot of support and help for the homeless: advice centers, emergency overnight stays, on-site social work, outpatient medical care, train station services and an offer for personal and clothing hygiene. However, the district admitted that accepting the offers was voluntary. “However, social work has no methodical or legal possibilities to prevent “wild pissing” bindingly or to sanction it afterwards.”
