In memory of a family that was persecuted and murdered during the Nazi era, five stumbling blocks were laid at the Archenhold Observatory in Treptower Park.

The family of the observatory founder Friedrich Simon Archenhold was commemorated on Friday under the eyes of students and relatives, as the Planetarium Berlin Foundation announced.

The family was expelled by the Nazi regime; his wife Alice and his daughter Hilde died in the concentration camp. Two sons had emigrated to England, it was said. Archenhold died in Berlin in 1939.

Stolpersteine are paving stones that are provided with a brass plaque on which the life dates of Jewish citizens and other victims of the Nazi rulers are engraved. According to its own information, the Archenhold Observatory is Germany’s largest and oldest public observatory.
