Students murder Nigerian fellow student for ‘blasphemy’ | Abroad

In northwestern Nigeria, a group of students killed a fellow student and then burned her body. That said a police spokesman for the city of Sokoto. It is an act of religious fanaticism.

The lynching happened at Shehu Shagari College in Sokoto. According to the school, the student is said to have made negative comments about the Islamic prophet Mohammed on social media. The victim, a sophomore, was a Christian herself.

Police arrested two students who were involved. The university is closed for the time being.

Videos circulating on the internet show a mob beating the student with sticks and pelting stones. Her body is then set on fire.

While southern Nigeria is predominantly Christian, northern Nigeria is home to many conservative Muslims. Sharia law, which prescribes the death penalty for blasphemy, is applied in many northern states.
