Students help 24 hours in residential care center in Norg: ‘Just fun’

Special guests in De Wiekslag care home in Norg. A few 13 and 14-year-olds showed up this week among the older residents.

Because the sophomores of Dr. Nassaucollege in Norg are discovering what they want to be when they grow up, based on a self-invented challenge. And so the students went to the residential care center with sleeping bags and air mattresses.

Sitting still was not an option for the teenagers. “One of my group members has brought bingo with prizes, we’re walking and pouring coffee,” says Lenn. Milan adds: “We unpacked the dishwasher, set the tables and played games with the elderly.”

Location manager Inge Smit is happy with it. “The image of elderly care is not always very positive, and if people of that age want to come and have a look: that is the future for care. Let them come.” She says residents enjoyed it. “People take great pleasure in the fact that young people put the sprinkles on the sandwiches,” she gives as an example.

The young people also enjoyed it and learned something. “I liked what those elderly people have to say the most,” says Milan. “The games, just fun after dinner”, Nena looks back on her favorite moment of the 24 hours in care.
