Student nurse ‘who planned terror attack’ caught with bomb in front of British hospital | Abroad

A British nursing student has appeared in court today after he was caught with a homemade bomb outside a hospital in the northern English city of Leeds last week. Mohammad Farooq, 27, is said to have planned to carry out a terror attack on the British air force.

Farooq was detained last Friday at the maternity ward of St. James University Hospital in Leeds, where he normally had to work a shift that day. Before his arrest, the 27-year-old student nurse allegedly threatened a man and said that he “wanted to kill everyone”, after which he pulled out a gun.

When police arrived on the scene, Farooq admitted that he was also carrying a bomb. He would have put it together with a pressure cooker, 13.7 kilograms of homemade fuel and a fuse. However, the gun turned out to be a fake.

The man is said to have been inspired by radical Islam and jihadists. He said he was encouraged via the internet to single-handedly attack Yorkshire Air Force Base. In the hospital, Farooq would have behaved aggressively because he had previously had a discussion with a colleague, he said in court.

Taking into account the preparations and research work, the court decided to charge the student with acts with intent to commit acts of terrorism. The man is also charged with possession of an explosive device with intent to endanger life or cause serious damage to property. He is also charged with possession of a counterfeit weapon. Superintendent James Dunkerly said it was an “isolated incident”. The hearing will continue next Friday.
