Last year, a big topic of conversation in connection with the Linna celebrations was the reform of party lighting created by the President of the Republic of Finland, Alexander Stubb.

Last year’s Independence Day reception saw dimmer, reddish lighting than before. In the past, Independence Day has been celebrated in the Presidential Palace with brighter lights.

The color lighting of the castle’s celebrations will also be preserved this year. That is the wish of the President of the Republic, Alexander Stubb, and Mrs. Suzanne Innes-Stubb.

Iltalehti asked readers last year whether the mood lighting was a successful or unsuccessful change. The majority of readers were of the opinion that the change was successful.

There were about 330 no answers about the success of the lighting, while there were close to 1,850 yes answers.

There were comments for and against Iltalehti’s Facebook pages.

– Much more relaxed and a warm feeling, when before it was so stiff and the lights shine directly in your face that you can’t see who’s shaking hands there.

– The lighting was really bad. You faked the colors of many suits. It’s a crazy reform, they said on social media.

The Independence Day reception will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025 at the Presidential Palace. About 1,700 guests from all over Finland will participate in the celebration this year. Half of those invited are first timers. This year, the castle’s festivities start half an hour earlier than before. The aim of the change is to ensure more barrier-free access for guests.
