With “Strung Out Johnny” Iggy Pop has shared the next single from his upcoming album “Every Loser”, on which he sings about his drug experiences, among other things.

The record was produced by Andrew Watt and will be released on January 6th, 2023. It started with the song “Frenzy”, which was released in October.

Drugs and excess in “Strung Out Johnny”

The new number is reminiscent of “The Idiot” (1977) paired with The Stooges influences and modern technology. Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith recorded the drums, and Smith’s former bandmate Josh Klinghoffer recorded the electric guitar. In addition to producing, Watt also contributed bass, guitar, backing vocals and keyboards.

Even the title of the song, in German “Zudroöhnter Johnny”, reveals that the content is about drugs. For example, they say, “First time you do it with a friend / Second time you do it in a bed / Third time you can’t get enough / And life just falls apart.” The Godfather of Punk not only sings about the main character Johnny, but also integrates himself into the story. So he sings at the beginning, “Hey man, I see you / Get up okay / Get out of here Iggy / Come on fix me.”

Today, the musician is open about his drug use in the past. According to his own statements, he no longer uses any substances – his negative view of them also becomes clear in “Strung Out Johnny”.

Next year, Pop will be the support act for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the tour dates are here.
