Strong serve Sudosa-Desto ensures victory at Eurosped

The volleyball players of Visser Assen/Sudosa-Desto have won their first game. At Eurosped, the Assenaren won in three sets.

The set positions 26-24, 25-22 and 25-23 for Sudosa-Desto suggest an exciting match. Yet that was not really the case. In all three sets, the team of coach duo Erwin Sikkema and Mark Afman made it unnecessarily difficult for itself in the final phase.

,,It is true that we were always ahead in the final phase of the sets, but Eurosped can play volleyball well”, said Sikkema and Afman. ,,They have a lot of length and a strong serve. The big difference is that we really have a team, including the people on the side, and that they have more of ‘islands’.

In the opening set, Sudosa-Desto did not immediately convert a 24-21 lead into a win. After the team had cleared a 19-15 deficit earlier, mainly at the hands of Paula Boonstra.

In the end it was Suzanne Benninga who served the winning run. Boonstra, who was in action for the first time this season after her ankle injury, seemed to force the decision in the second set. She served five runs in a row. As a result, her team went from 15-14 to 20-15 and a 2-0 lead seemed a matter of time

However, Sikkema had to flee in time-out at 22-22. Successfully. Three runs in a row followed. In the third set it got a bit messier on the side of Sudosa-Desto. ,,And then Suzanne (Benninga, red) makes sure with her serve that we also take this set. This is a great result.”
