Strong political signal to Russia: Moldovan President Sandu attends NATO meeting in Warsaw | Abroad

Moldova is not part of NATO. The republic is politically divided between pro-European and pro-Russian forces. Russian troops are still stationed in the Transnistria region, on the border with Ukraine.

Sandu represents the pro-European forces of the impoverished country. She sees the Russian war against Ukraine as a threat to Moldova. Recently she warned of a putsch that Russia would prepare. Biden already met with Sandu in Warsaw on Tuesday and also brought her up in his speech at the Royal Castle in Warsaw. “I am proud to stand with you and the freedom-loving people of Moldova,” he said.

The heads of state and government of the NATO member states in Central and Eastern Europe will meet with Biden on Wednesday afternoon about security in the region in light of the war in Ukraine. The participants are Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and the three Baltic countries Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is also expected in Warsaw.
