The Verdi service union is calling on employees at the Amazon location in Winsen in the Harburg district to go on a one-day strike starting Sunday evening. According to the union, the reason is Amazon’s refusal to recognize the applicable collective agreements. The campaign starts at 7:30 p.m. and is scheduled to last until Monday at 11:15 p.m. Several rallies are planned locally.
“Amazon customers are encouraged to order and consume more and more, especially at Christmas. However, the health of employees is currently suffering massively from the resulting performance and work density3, said Nonni Morisse, Verdi secretary for Amazon in Lower Saxony. At the Winsen location there are always layoffs due to sick days.
In addition to the demand to recognize the collective bargaining agreements of the retail and mail order businesses, Verdi is demanding a “collective agreement for good and healthy work” from Amazon. In the long dispute with the union, the company argues that it offers its employees fair wages with additional benefits. Among other things, reference is made to starting wages of 14 euros per hour. Amazon operates 20 large logistics centers in Germany. (dpa)
