Almost futuristic, Brain Massage can be considered a holistic treatment for your mind, a powerful boost of well-being when it’s out. Translated as “brain massage,” it is ideal when the mind is tired or when it is too stressed that it can no longer stop, continuing to work. An ideal alternative when yoga and meditation have not achieved the desired results.

“Also known as Brain Flossing or 8D audioit is a mental relaxation based on a type of music produced in such a way as to deceive the brain into believing that it is in a larger space, the sensation it gives is that the sounds come from different directions. Listening to it creates the illusion of being immersed in the music itself, as if it were revolving around us” explains Carolina Traverso, psychologist and psychotherapist.

The sensations that brain massage arouses are different: some people say that it is as if you could listen to music with your brain instead of your ears, others believe that it is like being transported to another dimension, leaving stress and thoughts outside. «The essential thing for practicing brain massage is the right music, available on YouTube or Spotify, and headphones. You lie down on the sofa and close your eyes.”

The boom of 8D music during the pandemic

Brain Massage is gaining interest thanks to TikTok. In fact, there are many videos on social media in which users talk about the benefits of this particular listening: «It is a very easy and affordable way for everyone to relax but not only that. There are many people who, for example, listen to 8D music on headphones while working or studying because it allows them to concentrate more.”

But how does 8D music work? Basic this particular music “exploits” Dolby Surround sound and, through headphones or speakers, creates the illusion of a totally immersive experience. This sensation allows the mind to wander, following the same notes that come from multiple directions. In doing so, the music causes an immersive and alienating sensation that relaxes the mind in a sort of virtual space.

But how does this music work? Binaural tones, those of 8D sound, were discovered in 1839 by the Prussian doctor Heinrich Wilhelm Dove and are those sounds capable of “tricking” the brain. These have a frequency lower than 1500Hz and a maximum variation of 30Hz and create a sort of interference with brain activity. These features create the illusion of perceive the music as coming from multiple sources and engage the brain to “chase” it, immersing oneself in this virtual space.

From here to success on TikTok it was a short step. At the moment there is still no scientific research to support these benefits: «To date there is no scientific evidence to support the benefits of 8D music. Therefore, if you are curious and want to try to be enveloped by the sounds of Brain Massage, you should know that Its benefits are not universal and you should stop listening immediately if you experience any discomfort. In fact, people suffering from autism or Asperger’s syndrome have said they feel nauseous and dizzy while listening. Luckily, the symptoms go away almost immediately. » concludes the expert.
