Stress-resistant volunteers wanted to lead Vuelta in the right direction

Municipalities in West Brabant are diligently looking for volunteers who can assist as traffic controllers during the Vuelta in August. In Drimmelen and Moerdijk, among others, about seventy people are needed to steer the cycling round in the right direction. They are also looking for about forty volunteers in Roosendaal.

The Tour of Spain will pass through the west of our province on August 21. During the Vuelta, the traffic controllers are at crucial points, such as in dangerous bends and on traffic islands. In addition, the volunteers are deployed to keep an eye on road closures.

The municipalities of Moerdijk and Drimmelen have placed an advertisement in local media in which they ask people to lend a hand during the passage of the Tour of Spain. “Are you hospitable, friendly and stress resistant? Then you are the person for this place!’, writes the municipality of Moerdijk in the appeal.

In Roosendaal, the deployment of volunteers is organized by the local cycling platform. Jeffrey Zwegers of the Wielerplatform Roosendaal is counting on the cooperation of the various cycling committees in the municipality.

“We have nine races a year within the municipality of Roosendaal. Think of the Turn of the Quay, the Hell of the Pin and the National Youth Round. There are probably people who also want to help out for an afternoon at the Vuelta. But additional registrations are certainly welcome.”

Traffic wardens in Moerdijk receive a Vuelta-style clothing package and a packed lunch. In Roosendaal, in addition to a ‘beautiful keepsake’, even a small compensation is considered. “It’s a privilege to be on the front row during the Vuelta anyway,” said Jeffrey Zwegers.

Volunteers are also being sought in other municipalities. It is not yet entirely clear how many and in which places of passage.
