A street race in Schijndel ended in a crash on Monday evening, eyewitnesses confirm to Omroep Brabant. A bystander saw how ‘a girl flew through the air’ after a moped was hit by a car.
A boy and girl were injured in the accident, just before 7:30 PM. She was on the back of the moped when they were hit by a car at the Wijbosscheweg-Structureweg intersection. Crossing the ring road there is also prohibited. Mopeds and cyclists have to go through the tunnel.
The boy has serious abrasions and was taken to hospital for a check-up. The girl is in worse condition and also had to go with the ambulance. An air ambulance arrived for her. Police have spoken to witnesses. The car involved sustained significant damage from the impact.
An eyewitness says she saw someone flying through the air. The moped would have been the last of a group that often races through Schijndel. To keep up with the rest, they would have run a red light. A total of four mopeds were involved. They themselves deny that they were racing. “We only went to McDonald’s”, is the reaction of one of the boys.
“I knew this was going to happen one day.”
But according to eyewitnesses, the group often drives ‘crazy through Schijndel’. For example, one woman says: “I knew this was going to happen one day. I’ve seen them do it before. They drive like crazy here.” She says that she has already had to avoid these guys three times. “Really very dangerous.” Another witness says that they regularly drive through a thirty-zone at seventy.
The local police officer has already had a conversation with the racers. A bystander reports that the boys usually mask their license plates. That was not the case this time.
