After eight hundred pages of script and two years of shooting, the time has come: The start date of the fourth season of “Stranger Things” has been set. Or rather: both start dates. The new season is almost twice as long as the previous ones and will therefore appear in two parts. On May 27th and July 1st, 2022. It should be the penultimate season of the series.
To get in the mood for the new season, the Duffer brothers released a open letter. In it, the directors write, “The good news is that the new season is just around the corner and it’s bigger than ever. But it is also the beginning of the end. Seven years ago we worked out the entire story arc for ‘Stranger Things’. […] We are now making giant strides towards the final. Season 4 will be the penultimate and Season 5 will be the last.”
It continues: “There are still many exciting stories to tell in the world of ‘Stranger Things’: new puzzles, new adventures, new unexpected heroes. But first, we hope you’ll join us as we unfold this story about a powerful girl named Elfie and her brave friends, a broken police chief and a determined mother, a small town called Hawkins, and an alternate dimension known as ‘the other side’ finalize.”
“It is our darkest season”
The plot of the new season begins six months after the Starcourt fight. Elfie and her friends try to come to terms with the consequences of back then. The fact that they are separated for the first time and also have to deal with the not always uncomplicated everyday high school life does not make the whole thing any easier. Finally, when a new supernatural threat emerges, the friends are left with a mystery. But its solution could finally put an end to the horror of the other side.
In addition, one thing is sometimes already clear: It will be action-packed and also much darker. Dustin actor Gaten Matarazzo said in an interview: “It’s definitely very action-packed. I’d say it’s our darkest season, which is saying something because it’s not a very light-hearted show. There are funny moments, but it’s a pretty dark premise. This is definitely our season, which I think takes its most disturbing turn.”
