In a new interview with the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, they revealed that the upcoming season will reveal the mystery of the “Upside Down.” In the series, “Upside Down” – Shadow World in German – refers to a parallel world in which creatures and evil forces exist.
Ross Duffer told Variety that they were aware early in the writing process that the most important question to answer was “the nature of the Upside Down.” He added: “Every season we asked ourselves, ‘Should we talk about this?’ And we said, ‘No, let’s wait.’ And then finally we said, ‘Well, now we have to do it!’”

The trailer for the series hints at a showdown between the town of Hawkins and the evil Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). Meanwhile, Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) mourns the death of Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn), whom the city believes is a murderer. The trailer also gives a first glimpse of the new character Dr. Kay. She is played by science fiction legend Linda Hamilton.
Time jump of a year and a half
Elsewhere in the interview, the brothers confirmed an 18-month time jump between the season four finale and the first episode of season five. All characters are back in the series town of Hawkins and are living there under military quarantine. The makers also confirmed that the finale would last around two hours.
The first part of the final season will be released on November 27th at 2 a.m. German time, the second part on December 26th at 2 a.m. The grand finale will be shown on New Year’s Day.
