Storm damage to Wilja’s self-built haunted house puts an end to the annual Halloween party

The annual Halloween party in Wilja’s haunted house in Amsterdam-Noord cannot take place this year due to extensive storm damage. Wilja Hemelrijk transformed her empty horse stable into a haunted house fifteen years ago, which she completely renews every year. However, major storm damage has put an end to the party this year: “The roof is gone, the windows have sagged. The stable has suffered quite a bit of damage.”

A storm that blew through Wilja’s property a few months ago caused a large part of the roof of her old horse stable to blow off. “Even the dolls have suffered damage, which is a shame because they are not cheap things.” Many windows are also broken and there are holes in the walls. “That just makes it too dangerous for children and parents to walk in. You never know when something will fall on someone.”

Wilja would have liked to have all the damage repaired so that she could open again on Halloween, but that is “simply” too expensive. That’s why Wilja is disappointed that she has to remain closed next week. “The time you put into making everything fun, it feels sad. It’s also very bad for the people who hoped to come for Halloween – they are regular guests.”

Dozens of visitors

Wilja normally receives dozens of visitors during Halloween. Both from the area and from abroad. “For example, people come from Edam, Monnickendam, Broek in Waterland, but also Canada, America and England.”

What Wilja likes most about her haunted house? “Just everything around it, the coffins, the skeletons, you name it. Just the creepiness.” But the most important thing, according to Wilja, is that the visitors have a good time. “If they are happy, I am happy too,” says Wilja.
