Stories about ‘Moorsele during WWII’ should not be forgotten

It was a period that left a mark on their lives. Next September it will be eighty years since Moorsele was liberated. The last Moorseleners who experienced it all got the floor today before their stories are forgotten.

Georges Dumortier was a teenager when the English liberated Moorsele on September 7, 1944. The Germans were entrenched at the airfield, near Georges’ house. German snipers themselves fired on civilians, he says. “Then someone was shot dead coming from the airport. He had not been married long and was standing at the facade of a house. A sniper shot him. I saw him lying there. His brain was hanging out the back.”

Moorsele was hit hard during the war. There was an airfield and they shared in the bombing of Kortrijk. Shocking stories that have stuck in the memory. It is important that these bright seniors tell what they have experienced, so that we do not forget their stories, says Heemkring Wibilinga, who organized this storytelling afternoon about WWII in Moorsele.
