Stop with DFB Cup victory in Germany

National goalkeeper Almuth Schult would like to end her career at VfL Wolfsburg with a DFB Cup win.

The 31-year-old, who is moving to US soccer club Angel City FC after this season, is with her team in the final on May 28 in Cologne after beating FC Bayern Munich 3-1 (1-0) in the semi-finals. “I want to stop here in Germany with a win in the DFB Cup,” said Schult in the “ARD” interview. “We also have a few fingers on the championship trophy, that’s outstanding.”

In the Bundesliga, Wolfsburg are four points ahead of their rivals Munich and are clearly on course for the title. The VfL players are also dreaming of the Champions League final on May 21 in Turin. However, defending champions FC Barcelona are favorites before the semi-final first leg on Friday. Over 90,000 spectators are expected at Camp Nou. When asked about the possible treble, Schult said with a smile: “I’ll take it if someone presents it to me.”

Schult: “Were mercilessly effective today”

Her commitment in Munich was questionable until the end, as she had to postpone her comeback in the DFB selection last week due to a shoulder strain. In the tough duel against the German champions of 2021, Schult then showed a sovereign performance. “We were ruthlessly effective today, even if we didn’t play our best game,” she said. The 2016 Olympic champion and the women from Wolfsburg can now win the trophy for the eighth time in a row. The final opponent will be determined on Monday (6.30 p.m. / Sky) between Bayer Leverkusen and Turbine Potsdam.

Coach Tommy Stroot’s team robbed FC Bayern of their last chance for the title this season. In front of 2300 spectators, Dutchwoman Jill Roord scored twice (19th and 61st minute) and substitute Tabea Waßmuth (80th) for the guests. Serbian Jovana Damnjanovic equalized in the meantime with a penalty kick (50th).

“We fought well in the game, but not always as we wanted in terms of football,” said Bayern captain Lina Magull. “After intense weeks, today is another low blow.” The Bayern women, who were much stronger this time, were also unable to take revenge for the 0:6 swatter in the league two weeks ago in Wolfsburg. Coach Jens Scheuer had to watch his team’s end on TV at home because of a positive corona test on the day of the game.
