“Stop pretending you have an Oxford degree”: Philippine President-elect ‘Bongbong’ Marcos under fire for embellishing resume | Abroad

Critics are calling on Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Junior, who won the Philippine presidential election last week, to tell the truth about his undergraduate undergraduate degree at the prestigious Oxford University in the United Kingdom. Despite Bongbong’s claims to the contrary, the university confirms that the dictator’s son did not complete his Philosophy, Politics and Economics degree, which he started in 1975. That reports The Guardian.

Yet the future Philippine president and his entourage continue to claim that he did receive a degree from Oxford. However, the university formally denies this, after a Filipino supporter of Marcos’ rival Leni Robredo, who lives in the United Kingdom, asked the university for clarification. “According to our records, he did not complete his education, but in 1978 he received a special diploma in social studies,” the university said.

In interviews, Marcos Junior likes to show off his alleged Oxford degree. Also on his website, it states that he “completed his undergraduate degree at Oxford University and graduated with a special degree in social studies”.

Bongbong Marcos didn’t choke on his first lie: experts say he won the Philippine presidential election last week thanks to a massive disinformation campaign.

Pattern of disinformation

The Filipino who asked for clarity from the university says Marcos Junior must “stop misrepresenting his ‘special diploma’, which is certainly not a degree. It is clear that he has not completed his studies.” The woman admitted that it may not seem that important, “since our constitution states that a presidential candidate must only be able to read and be of a certain age. But people in the Philippines are very impressed by people who have studied abroad: that really means something. What he has said about it is a reflection of his personality and character. It is also a reflection of the pattern of disinformation that many researchers have pointed out recently.”
