02.07.2026, 11:00 Uhr – Autor: Thomas Hilmes

The new schedule is out! 1. FC Kaiserslautern kicks off the 2. Bundesliga season with an away game against VfL Wolfsburg. For the final matchday, the Red Devils will also play away against Energie Cottbus.

The complete schedule has just been released by the league association, which will now simply be called “Bundesliga” from this season onwards (formerly: DFL). It was already known that the opening match will take place on Friday evening, August 7, 2026, between VfL Bochum and Hertha BSC. For FCK, the league kicks off with a highly anticipated away match against Bundesliga relegation candidate and 2. Bundesliga powerhouse Wolfsburg, followed by an exciting home fixture against Karlsruher SC in the Pfalz-Baden derby at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion. This means that within just a few days, the Red Devils will face two significant derbies, as a week later, on Friday, August 21, they will compete in the DFB-Pokal against Waldhof Mannheim. The schedule continues to entice with an away match against FC St. Pauli—for the first time in many years scheduled in the summer rather than winter—and a home game against Darmstadt 98.

The season finale in May 2027 starts with two home games against Arminia Bielefeld and Hannover 96, before heading off for a lengthy away match against promoted side Cottbus on the last matchday.

Kick-off Times and International Breaks: What to Expect

The kick-off times remain the same: Friday at 18:30 (two games), Saturday at 13:00 (three games), Saturday at 20:30 (one game – live on RTL or “Nitro”), and Sunday at 13:30 (three games). However, international breaks will be newly regulated, with only three planned instead of four as in previous seasons. The early September break has been eliminated; instead, the end of September break has been extended to last two weekends without any league matches. The breaks in November and March will remain unchanged.

An additional noteworthy detail for the 2026/27 season: On May 1—previously a Friday—there will no longer be Bundesliga matches due to a long-standing concession to support the heavily burdened police on this date. Since May 1, 2027, falls on a Saturday, which is a primary matchday, the league association has decided to declare the entire weekend as match-free. This means that for the first time in three years, there will be an English week in the lower league on March 2/3. Furthermore, the short winter break will commence after the 16th matchday instead of the usual 17th.
