According to the jury, Bruges succeeds in preserving the medieval character of the city, while at the same time responding to contemporary challenges such as climate adaptation, mobility and infrastructure. “We want to keep our city liveable without sacrificing authenticity,” says first ships Mathijs Goderis, competent for, among other things, urban development and monument care.
“This recognition is an encouragement to continue our commitment. Heritage care is not only about retaining buildings, but also about keeping them meaningful in the city of today and tomorrow.”
