Still too many speeders on the road where Ilayda died, the municipality intervenes

Motorists are still driving too fast on the Westtangent, between the N242 (Westerweg) and the Zuidtangent intersection. Previous measures, such as a rewarding green wave, have not had the desired effect. To slow down speeding drivers, the municipality of Dijk en Waard will narrow the lanes this autumn.

In 2020, the traffic lights have already been adjusted in such a way that if you drive here at 50 km/h, all traffic lights should turn green. “However, this previously taken measure has not had the desired effect on driving behaviour. People are still driving too fast,” the municipality reports.

The council expects that the extra measure cars and trucks are forced to adhere to the speed limit, so that traffic now ends up in the ‘green wave’. “Because the two lanes in both directions are maintained, with clear markings, the flow on the road remains good.”

On the Westtangent, cars regularly tear dangerously across the road. Who drives into Heerhugowaard from that road, is immediately reminded of the tragic death of 15-year-old Ilayda.

In June 2019, she was fatally hit by a car there. Three years before that, in July 2016, Stefan Koppes is on that same path driven off his scooter and he also dies. Also in April of this year a woman was injured when she was crossing the street on her bicycle and was hit.
