The government announced in November that vaccination would become mandatory for NHS healthcare staff in England. The obligation did not come into effect until April, so that there would be no shortage of staff in the winter months.

When the initial decision was made, “the delta variant was dominant,” said Health Minister Sajid Javid. “It has since been replaced by omikron, which is less severe and has halved the percentage of people who need urgent help or need to be hospitalized.”

According to the minister, it was therefore a good idea to reconsider the decision. Of the 90,000 participants in a public consultation on the issue, 90 percent opposed the requirement. The minister did point out the “professional responsibility” of healthcare professionals to be vaccinated.

The staff of the residential care centers also no longer have to be fully vaccinated from March 15, according to the press release.

Some 52 million of the 67 million Britons have received two doses of a vaccine, more than 38 million of them also received their booster vaccine.
