Still fewer air travelers in 2022 than before the corona crisis

Last year, Dutch aviation was still not at the level it was before the corona pandemic, figures from Statistics Netherlands show. Compared to 2019, a quarter fewer travelers flew to and from the Netherlands. The number of flights at Eindhoven Airport was also below the level of 2019 last year.

Last year, 38,979 flights took place at Eindhoven Airport. This is more than eight thousand more than last year, but it is still more than a thousand fewer flights than in 2019.

Summer is busiest
A total of 61.3 million passengers flew to and from a Dutch airport last year, more than twice as many as the year before. Three-quarters of those passengers stayed within Europe. More aircraft took to the air in 2022 and three-quarters of the seats were occupied per flight. In the last year before the corona pandemic, four of the five seats were still filled.

The summer holidays were the busiest period at both Schiphol and the airports of Eindhoven, Rotterdam, The Hague, Maastricht and Groningen and that is reflected in the figures. In August, 6.4 million travelers flew to and from the Netherlands, in July 6.2 million.

Goods flights
The number of cargo flights increased by 53 percent compared to 2021 to 463,000. This is still eighteen percent less than in 2019. However, the amount of freight transported was lower. In 2022, one and a half million tons of goods will be flown to or from the Netherlands, the year before this was fourteen percent more. In 2019, slightly more cargo was transported by air: 1.7 million tonnes.
