CoronavirusThe current wave of coronavirus appears to be slowing and the numbers may stabilize soon, but the respiratory virus season has only just begun. “The cycle of successive waves, undulations and plateaus is likely to remain a reality for this fall, winter and possibly even into early spring,” predicts virologist Steven Van Gucht.
The virologist emphasized during a press conference that the coronavirus cannot yet be considered an endemic or normal virus. Corona still has a great contagious power and causes even more disease than the flu, it sounded.
“We can continue to expect continued pressure from the coronavirus in the coming weeks and months,” said the virologist. An increasing burden on healthcare is also still expected, “but not an explosive or exponential increase as has been the case in some previous waves”.
New variants
New waves can also arise from new variants of Covid-19. “It is likely that within a few weeks the current corona variant (BA.5) will be retired and replaced by one or perhaps even several new variants,” says Van Gucht.
“The new PQ1 variant, for example, already represents 10 percent of the infections and is rapidly gaining ground. The emergence of such a new variant could once again stimulate an increase in the corona figures.”
