Steven Tyler’s daughter made him cry with a Slipknot album

Communication between father and daughter was poor. Mia Tyler was depressed, partly because her parents had separated. Her way of telling Steven Tyler how she felt was to give him a Slipknot LP to listen to. She actually made the musician cry, as she reports in a new interview.

In an episode of “Bad Bad Babydad podcast, Mia Tyler tells how Slipknot helped her have a better relationship with her father. The 44-year-old is the daughter of Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler and actress Cyrinda Foxe, who died in 2002. In the interview she remembers that after her parents separated had to struggle with a lot of emotions. As she herself says, when she was young she tried to find a way to properly express the many different feelings that come with growing up. She explains specifically in the interview: “When I really felt like I wanted to tell my dad how I felt and I didn’t know how to tell him, maybe that was my way out of my feelings; the same way someone would come out… I was so afraid to tell him that I was depressed and upset in life and that he was responsible for it and left me with my mother and all that stuff.”

“He listened to the whole album and cried in the forest.”

The then 14-year-old tried to communicate her emotions through music and gave Steven Tyler a copy of Slipknot’s first record, SLIPKNOT, with the words: “Listen to it if you want to understand how I feel.” Then months passed before he responded to this particular request. But then the following feedback came: “He called me sobbing and said, ‘I’m so sorry.’ He just sat there with his Walkman and listened to the whole album and cried in the woods.”

Gratitude for music as a way of communication

Slipknot singer Corey Taylor, with whom Tyler is now friends, told her after this difficult phase, how much his music helped her have a better relationship with her father. “You don’t know how much you helped me bond with my dad,” she thanked the Slipknot member. “This music is so hard and such a relief because I was so upset and mad at life. Listening to this music solved that for me.”

Abuse allegations against Aerosmith singer

Most recently, Steven Tyler was in the media spotlight because of allegations of abuse. One woman claimed that he sexually harassed her when she was a teenager. This emerges from a lawsuit filed on Thursday (November 2, 2023) in New York. A year earlier, another plaintiff had sued him in a Los Angeles court. She accused him of similar sexual assaults in the 1970s.
