Steven Cherundolo would ‘never rule out’ a return to Hannover 96

head coach in the United States

The former Bundesliga professional and now a coach Steven Cherundolo could imagine a return to his former club Hannover 96. “I would never rule out such a commitment,” said the 43-year-old, who is on the sidelines at Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer, in the podcast “Telephone Copenhagen”new press“. He also said: “I really like being in Hanover, I’ve always enjoyed working for the club.” Cherundolo was a player at Lower Saxony between 1999 and 2014 before he stayed with the club in various coaching positions in the youth sector until 2018.

The former defender has kept his home in Hanover. “It could be quick,” he said of a future engagement. He would be “happy” if there was a renewed collaboration: “But it has to fit for both of them, and they both have to want it.” Cherundolo led LAFC to the final for the MLS title in his first year as head coach. Next Saturday (9 p.m./CET) the team will be fighting for stars like Gareth Bale (33) and Giorgio Chiellini (38) against Philadelphia Union. The LAFC, which was founded in 2014 and has played in MLS since 2018, could celebrate winning the championship for the first time.

Cherundolo has coached the team in 39 games to date and averaged 1.95 points per game. This is only the second head coaching position in the men’s division for the American, having previously coached the Las Vegas Lights FC in the second-rate USL Championship. Cherundolo played a total of 87 international matches for the US team between 1999 and 2012, took part in three World Cup finals and can look back on 15 years of experience in the Bundesliga. In the German Oberhaus he played a total of 302 games in which he got six goals and 19 assists.
