Steve McCurry: how is the sample in La Rural

Of Afghanistan to the Indiafrom Southeast Asia to Africa, from Cuba to the United States or from Brazil to Italy, make up a fascinating repertoire of images in which the human element is always the protagonist.

“Most of my images are based on people. I look for the unexpected moment, the moment in which the essence of the soul appears, the experience reflected in the face of a person, a person trapped in a landscape of war that we can call the human condition”, confessed the author in his first interviews .

The 72-year-old light artist has won several awards throughout his career, such as the gold medal robert capa and a Emmy. His approach to the art of the still image began when he was a young student, studying cinematography at the University of Pennsylvania. But after graduating from it, he leaned into analog photographic production, making his first experiences in the field in India.

His most recognized production, in the professional field, began with the graphic coverage of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. In the war, McCurry resorted to creative tricks to record the events and, at the same time, to remain unnoticed in the midst of the conflict. Today, he is one of the few photographers who still resort to the use of film composite material.

Its Asian correspondent, which included coverage of the conflicts in Iran, Cambodia, Lebanon and the Gulf; was published in the print editions of The New York times, TIME and Paris Match. This work was recognized by being part of the prestigious Magnum Agency and being one of the most regular and referential photographers of National Geographic. McCurry appears portrayed in the television documentary “The phase of Human Condition” Made by award-winning French filmmaker Denis Delestrac.

The photograph named “The Afghan Girl” was considered “the most recognized” of National Geographic. The image was widely used in communication campaigns of Amnesty International, raising awareness of the consequences of war and the suffering to which women and children were subjected in armed conflicts. The identity of the minor portrayed was unknown for more than 15 years, until a journalistic team was able to locate the woman. Currently, Sharbat Gula, 50, lives in Italy with her children after the fall of Kabul to the Taliban in 2021.
