British fashion brand Stella McCartney will this summer launch the world’s first luxury bag made from mycelium, the root-like structure of mushrooms.
Available from July 1st, Stella McCartney’s ‘Frayme Mylo’ bag marks a milestone for the British brand and a major step forward in the innovation of vegan materials for fashion.
The British brand has had a long-term partnership with Mylo developer Bolt Threads since 2017, and since the launch of the leather-look-and-feel fabric, they’ve partnered with the biotech company to show how science meets high fashion -Design can represent a sustainable alternative.
Making its debut on a Paris Fashion Week runway in October 2021, the ‘Frayme Mylo’ bag is crafted by Italian artisans trained to work with the eponymous mycelium-based alternative to animal leather. The bag features an oversized recyclable aluminum chain strap that wraps around the bag and a statement cast zinc alloy medallion.

The striking vegan bag reinvigorates classic brand codes, inspired by Stella McCartney’s ‘Falabella’ bag, the brand’s first luxury vegan bag, launched in 2009 and selling more than a million copies. The ‘Falabella’ was also the brand’s first prototype Mylo product, unveiled as part of the ‘Fashioned from Nature’ exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in 2018.
“It’s an honor to work so closely with Stella and her team as they break new ground in luxury fashion with Mylo,” said Dan Widmaier, founder and CEO of Bolt Threads, in a statement.
“Their category-defining pioneering role in animal-free fashion and the use of sustainable materials paves the way for a more responsible fashion industry. The launch of the first-ever Mylo luxury bag is a major milestone for responsible consumers, the biomaterials industry and the future of luxury fashion.”
The first commercial drop of the ‘Frayme Mylo’ will be a limited edition, with bags numbered 1 to 100. It will be available exclusively in Stella McCartney boutiques from July 1st, priced at £1,995.
