Steinmeier recalled that in three years it will be 50 years since the signing of the Helsinki Agreement. “May this anniversary not be a time when we in the East and West will be forced to admit that efforts to achieve a lasting peace in Europe have failed,” the President continued. — On the contrary, let’s work on updating this heritage. I appeal to President Putin: untie the noose around the neck of Ukraine. And join us in finding a way to keep peace in Europe.”

The President also said that the threat of war is brewing in Eastern Europe and that, in his opinion, Russia is responsible for this. He stressed that the deployment of troops near the border with Ukraine “cannot be misunderstood.” “This is a threat to Ukraine. But people there have the right to life without fear and threats, to self-determination and sovereignty. No country in the world has the right to destroy it – and we will resolutely respond to anyone who tries, ”added Steinmeier.

He also noted that due to the Ukrainian conflict, tensions are also growing in the countries of Eastern Europe, therefore Berlin supports Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.
