Stefan Kuntz as the new national coach, Martina Voss-Tecklenburg before a promotion? The German Football Association (DFB) has not commented on a media report about a personnel castling in the women’s national team.
“I have no information about that,” said a spokeswoman after the DFB team’s 4-0 win in the Nations League against Iceland.
“Sport Bild” had previously reported that Voss-Tecklenburg would be promoted to the position of senior director for the DFB women, and Kuntz could then work under her as the new national coach.
Accordingly, the 60-year-old should be the favorite among both the players and the association to take over the office.
The problem: Concrete discussions about the possible interplay cannot currently be held with Voss-Tecklenburg. The four-time European champion is ill and will be out indefinitely. Assistant coach Britta Carlson has currently taken over her duties on an interim basis.
A possible swap of the coaching position from Voss-Tecklenburg to Kuntz should be well received by the DFB women. The current national coach is hotly disputed internally. This leaked out after the embarrassing preliminary round exit at the World Cup in the summer.
Unclear situation with Germany’s women’s national team
The unclear future due to Voss-Tecklenburg’s sick leave is putting a strain on the national players. “The situation does not leave us unaffected. We have confidence in those responsible to find the fastest possible solution for everyone,” said goalkeeper Merle Frohms.
“I would be lying if I said it wasn’t an issue within the team,” admitted interim coach Carlson. “I would like to see clarity for everyone so that Germany can regain its strength as it was before.”
Kuntz, most recently fired as Turkey’s national coach, was also discussed as a possible successor to men’s national coach Hansi Flick. Julian Nagelsmann ultimately took over his position.
