Stewart founded Satellit Records in Memphis in 1957 with his sister Estelle Axton. Stax later emerged from it. The name is composed of the first letters of the surnames of the siblings.
The label set trends in soul music in the 1960s and 1970s and helped develop Mephis soul. Among others, Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes and Carla Thomas were under contract there. The label’s house band was Brooker T. & the MG’s. They produced hits like “Green Onions”, “In the Midnight Hour” and “Hold on I’m Coming” in the early 1960s.
