Status holders are allowed to stay in Veldhoven for half a year longer

The municipality of Veldhoven will keep the temporary reception location for status holders open longer. Group accommodation De Buitenjan houses 158 people and would remain open until February 1, 2023, which will now be August 1. The municipality announced this on Wednesday.

Veldhoven thus follows a national trend, because more and more municipalities are deciding to keep their temporary reception locations available for asylum seekers for longer. This is done at the request of the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers.

Mayor Marcel Delhez: “Veldhoven wants to handle the reception of refugees and status holders with care. We are doing our part in the current crisis situation, but we are now also looking at more structural solutions for the future. In March we will see whether De Buitenjan should continue to be used for status holders, or whether there is another solution.”

Shortage
There is a national shortage of reception places for asylum seekers and status holders. The government wants municipalities to take care of them. For example, there will be an emergency shelter in Rosmalen at the Autotron at the end of January. Extra space has also been made in Overloon and Eindhoven will receive 400 status holders and asylum seekers as soon as possible.

A temporary reception center has also been set up in the municipality of Bergen op Zoom. From December, 80 status holders will be accommodated in the former hostel StayOkay. In Oisterwijk, 100 asylum seekers and status holders will be staying at holiday park De Reebok until 30 April 2023.

In the past, refugees were also received in Ulicoten and Heeze, just like in Helmond. Between February and September, 40 young refugees under the age of 18 stayed there in a location on the Mierloseweg. Later, until December 1, 70 elderly refugees were housed there.

Bake
There were also plans for the arrival of 300 asylum seekers at the Zorgboog in Bakel, but the villagers lay down for that. They were supported in this by MP Geert Wilders of the PVV. The municipality is now looking for a new location for a small group.

In Someren, residents also protested against a temporary location to receive asylum seekers. In the intended building, camping farm De Hoof, a fire was set on November 24. The police have shared camera images of the perpetrators, but so far without results.
